Victoria Urban Village – Presentation by Guest Kathy Sayers, Our Urban Village

June 12, 2021. 10:30 am - 12:00 pm. PST - Zoom.

Join us for a presentation with Kathy Sayers from Our Urban Village – Canada’s first ‘cohousing lite’ community.

“When we thought about launching our cohousing community in Vancouver, 3 things became apparent immediately.  We would need to guarantee a loan on up to 7.5 million dollars to secure the 3 lots usually required for cohousing.  We would need to make all the hiring, marketing and design decisions to build it.  And, most cohousing efforts fail (up to 80%).

I’ll talk about how we searched for a less risky and time-consuming way to build an urban cohousing community by partnering with an innovative developer who already owned land. My talk will cover how we found our developer, built a trusting relationship, overcame hurdles and roadblocks, and discovered what worked and what didn’t. I’ll also explore how we differ from traditional cohousing and the tradeoffs we had to make.”
Kathy Sayers:

“After I retired from my communication company, I began looking at how I wanted to spend the last third (hopefully!) of my life. My attraction to cohousing is probably the result of moving every couple of years when I was a child. I have a built-up longing for deep roots and knowing my neighbours. When I heard about cohousing, I knew I wanted to know more.  Unfortunately, the more I learned, the more I realized how onerous it is to build a cohousing community in pricey Vancouver.  Could there be an easier way?  The cohousing lite approach we developed is one solution to building urban cohousing. Happily, Our Urban Village on Main Street in Vancouver is the result.”
